From 1886 to 1942, the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Division of Pomology commissioned thousands of watercolors, mostly from talented female artists, to produce a national register of botanical illustrations. The results highlight the diversity of fruit in exquisite detail, with artistic and scientific accuracy. The apples, plums, strawberries, loquats, and other fruit seem to glow from within, as if the Roman goddess of fruit trees, Pomona herself, had nurtured them.
