John James Audubon was an American naturalist, botanical illustrator, ornithologist, and painter. The artist was one of the first to depict birds as they appeared in the wild. His major work, a color-plate book titled The Birds of America, is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever assembled. Audubon described over 1,000 species, and his prints are among the most famous in all of birding.
